I expect it depends on the insurance company bud, it might be a clause in your work's policy saying that no-one under 21 can drive under it, and his work's policy is likely with a different company that does allow it. Probably costs them more to do it though.

I know it's a scandalous amount of money to insure yourself under your own policy at 18, but if you can afford it then it's a good idea, the earlier you start clocking up the no claims the better. That said, no matter how much no claims you have, while you're under 25 it's still going to be dear.

If it's any consolation I'd rather be 18 and paying a fortune for insurance than be late 20's ( ) and getting cheap insurance.

One of the big advantages with how the modified scene is going is that it's possible to have a very nice car at a younger age now. It was all jap power for a while there (which you've no hope getting insured on) but it's shifted to euro/dub now, meaning that you can buy a 1.1 polo, lower it and stick some nice rims on, lovely motor and are able to insure it a lot easier.

You bought anything yet, or had anything out for a test drive bud?

Double post? :P

Yeah - Insurance is a pain in the arse ¬_¬ . Even though you're cars small in size and engine, it can easily afford 2 , 3 or even 4 times the price of the car.

Example :

Saxo - 1.1 - 75,000 miles - £440
Insurance ( cheapest i could find ) - £2100

No idea what you're talking about bud

That's a shocking price Arez, did you take it in your own name then or are you a named driver on another policy? I know that at 18 or 19 I couldn't have afforded that.

If it's any consolation, my car's group 19 and it cost me the grand total of £250 to insure last year.

My own name at my dads yard in Mullusk. I kinda had to. At my own front door, would have cost me over £3000. Its bloody terrible the prices. And its not even worth the hassle driving un-insured.

How many NCB years is that jimbob? :P

Lots of years (touch wood) ncb, although I broke the period five or six years ago when we were down to one car between us and had to start again. I think 5 years is the maximum discount you can get anyway, so it doesn't matter once you're over 25 whether you've 5 years or 10 years ncb, it's the same discount.
Postcode's a big factor too, I'm out in the sticks.
